Forward Deployed Engineer
Location: Kansas City, MO | Reports To: VP of Operations
Base Salary: $70,000–$85,000 | Type: Full-time
Position Summary
Block One Automation is seeking a Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) to work directly with customers to deploy, integrate, commission, and support warehouse automation systems. This role sits at the intersection of software, robotics, systems engineering, and customer operations.
The Forward Deployed Engineer will take ownership of technical challenges in the field, working closely with customers and Block One Automation's international teams to bring automated systems from installation through production operation. The ideal candidate is technically capable, comfortable working independently at customer facilities, and able to troubleshoot problems that span software, networking, controls, robotics, and mechanical systems.
This is a hands-on position for someone who enjoys solving real-world problems and seeing the systems they work on operate in production.
Key Responsibilities
- Deploy and commission robotic and warehouse automation systems at customer facilities
- Configure software, computers, networks, robotic equipment, sensors, scanners, cameras, and other system components
- Execute commissioning procedures and verify that systems meet performance and operational requirements
- Identify and resolve technical issues encountered during installation and commissioning
- Assist with system tuning and optimization to improve reliability, throughput, and accuracy
- Responsible for the day to day running of the automation system at the customer location
- Support continuous improvement, root cause analysis, and reliability initiatives via our internal task tracking system
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Software, or related field
- 0–3 years experience in either a technical or warehouse operations role
- Strong technical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- Comfortable interacting directly with customers in operational environments

- Annual base salary: $70,000–$85,000

Work Environment: This position requires the ability to regularly lift and carry up to 50 pounds and to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb ladders, and work at heights or in confined spaces for extended periods. Work is performed primarily in warehouse environments where employees may be exposed to elevated noise levels, moving machinery, and varying temperatures. Required personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn in accordance with company and customer safety requirements.
